The International Tourism Trade fair FITUR goes green

The new monographic section at the Trade Fair will include solutions designed to improve the energy efficiency of the hotel sector

The 30th edition of the International Tourism Trade Fair (FITUR) is taking place in Madrid, Spain between 20 and 24 January 2010 and will pay specific attention to the topic of sustainability in the hotel industry.

The Trade Fair, organised by IFEMA, has created, jointly with the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) and the Madrid Tourist Board, the monographic section FITUR GREEN, which will include proposals designed to promote rational energy use in the hotel sector.

This initiative falls under the auspices of the European Hotel Energy Solutions project, which was conceived to respond to the growing phenomenon of climate change and its impact on tourism.

Its aims include encouraging the application of renewable energy sources in accommodation for tourists in the European Union Hotel Energy Solutions is organised by the United Nations Environment Programme, the International Hotel & Restaurant Association; the European Renewable Energy Council and the French Environment and Energy Management Agency. Furthermore, the UNWTO is the executing bureau for the project.

Iberia backs “Madrid 2016″ and christens “Olympics” Aircraft

Iberia unveiled and christened the aircraft publicizing Madrid’s bid to host the 2016 Olympic Games, an Airbus A-321, whose fuselage bears the “Madrid 2016” logo.

The ceremony presided over by Madrid Mayor Alberto Ruiz Gallardón and Iberia Chairman Antonio Vázquez took place at Iberia’s La Muñoza maintenance installations adjoining the Madrid-Barajas airport.

The aircraft will fly to Copenhagen

On September 30 the 200-seat Airbus, registered as EC-JZM, will fly the official Madrid 2016 delegation to Copenhagen where it will attend the final balloting by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to select the host city of the 2016 games. A second aircraft will carry the remaining part of the delegation, along with journalists and guests.

Both will carry the “Madrid 2016” emblem on seat backs, and it will also appear in the Iberia in-flight magazines Ronda and Excelente, with a press run of 340,000 copies. All this is part of the effort to promote the Madrid candidacy among Iberia passengers and employees at all the destinations served by the Spanish airline.

Iberia was also assigned the task of bringing members of the IOC from Brazil to Spain last May to make an appraisal of Madrid’s candidacy.

More than 6,330 customers and employees have volunteered to support the bid

Iberia is also seeking support for Madrid’s bid among its customers and staff. Via the www.iberia.com web site and the airline’s intranet, as well as company offices in Madrid and the operational hub at T4 in the Madrid-Barajas airport, in the space of a fortnight more that 6,330 people joined the tens of thousands of existing supporters.

95 Iberia Plus “Platinum 10” cardholders

The 95 people who have flown the most with the Spanish airline since the Iberia Plus was launched got issued “Platinum 10” cards

Iberia’s chairman, Antonio Vázquez, met in the Madrid Casino on September 11 with the airline’s best customers to reward them for their loyalty. The 95 people who have flown the most with the Spanish airline since the Iberia Plus was launched will be issued “Platinum 10” cards in recognition of the trust they have placed in the company. These customers each fly an average of 50 times a year with Iberia, and some fly as many as 250 times, or even 300 times a year on the Madrid-Barcelona Puente Aéreo shuttle.

Since the programme began each of these customers has earned enough points for 343 Business Plus class flights to South America, or 3,000 flights on the shuttle.

“Platinum 10” cardholders will enjoy all the benefits offered to Iberia Plus Platinum cardholders for the next 10 years, and will not be obliged to renew their cards. Noteworthy among these benefits are limousine service, access by the cardholder and a guest to all Iberia and oneworld VIP lounges, free parking at Madrid and Barcelona airports, an extra 20 kg. luggage allowance, an extra 20% of Iberia Plus points on all their Iberia flights, free comprehensive travel insurance on all foreign trips, exclusive attention at the Iberia Plus Platinum Centre, and the right to check in at Business Class counters regardless of the seating class used, along with the automatic reservation of preferred seats.

The other major advantage for Iberia Plus “Platinum 10” cardholders is that their points do not expire, and can be redeemed at any time over the next 10 years.

Iberia Plus was launched in 1991 and was Europe’s first frequent flyers programme. Today it boasts more than 4 million cardholders in 200 countries around the world, of whom more than 50% are now registered with Iberia Plus online, a direct and permanent communications channel available on Iberia’s web site www.iberia.com.

A study by the international consultants ‘IdeaWorks’ found Iberia Plus to be the programme that most generously rewards its customers, and that in 2008 alone it handed out 670,000 flights in exchange for Iberia Plus points.

In addition, Iberia Plus has gradually incorporated many leading companies in several fields, and today more than 80 companies offer special terms to Iberia Plus members. These partners and associates include 15 airlines –including all members of the oneworld alliance– serving more than 800 destinations, nearly 30 hotel chains around the world, car rental firms, credit card operators, service stations, financial services companies, insurers, telecoms, leisure services, health and beauty companies, restaurants, retailers and more.
